Getting GPS Waypoints off the Internet

Go to www.MapsOnUs.com

Type in the address you wish to locate and hit Draw Map.

After the map displays, using your mouse, click once on the exact position you want to locate.  {This will zoom and center the map, and display the Lat/Long in the dialog bar below the map (you may have to scroll down to see it)}

It reads in the “Degrees.degrees mode”.  It should look like this:  118.444477  33.97137

Write down the Lat/Long and turn on your GPS.

Go into the Set Up menu and get the “Position” screen.  {You do not need to be outside or have your GPS hot to do the following.}

Change the “Position Format” to read “hddd.ddddº”

Now go to the waypoint menu and select “New Waypoint”

Enter the lat/long you got from the Internet.

Use the “GoTo” function to locate the position you just entered.

You’ll find that it gets you about ½ block from your desired location.

Note:  If you normally keep you GPS in the Degrees Minute Seconds Mode (DMS or hddd.mm’ss.s”) mode you can change degrees.degrees into DMS by entering 118.44477 into a scientific calculator and pressing HMS (hours minutes seconds).  It should now read 118.2641172 which is 118º 26’ 41.172”.  You can round that out to 41.2” to fit into the waypoint.  Do that both for the Lat Long.  33.97137 should read 33.5816932 or 33º 58’ 16.932”.

Check the above numbers with your calculator to make sure you are getting the same results as above, before entering any of your waypoints.  You don’t want to end up in Brazil…
